Lawyer says Jackson Mahomes ‘did nothing wrong’ with restaurant owner. But we saw the video | Opinion

You can’t kiss someone without their permission. If you do, it’s against the law. It’s that simple.

I cringed as I watched video footage of Jackson Mahomes, younger brother of Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, grabbing the neck of a 40-year-old woman and forcibly kissing her.

What was he thinking?

The kiss was unwelcome, Aspen Vaughn, owner of Aspens Restaurant and Lounge in Overland Park, told The Star’s Mike Hendricks. That’s a problem. What possessed the 22-year-old Mahomes to grab Vaughn by the neck and force his mouth onto hers? That isn’t a move from a Hollywood romance flick, kid. Real life actions have real life consequences, and the younger Mahomes could find himself in legal trouble.

Overland Park police have reviewed footage from the restaurant’s surveillance camera that shows the Feb. 25 encounter, officials said. Police are also investigating allegations that Mahomes shoved a 19-year-old waiter several times in a separate incident the same night.

As of Saturday, no charges have been filed against Mahomes.

On the video Vaughn supplied to The Star, Mahomes is shown grabbing her by the neck from behind and kissing her on the mouth. At 5 foot, 4 inches, Vaughn struggles to pull away from Mahomes, who is 6’-6”.

After Vaughn wipes her mouth with her hands, Mahomes grabs her by the neck once more and tries to kiss Vaughn a second time, but she pushes him away. Vaughn wants Mahomes investigated for sexual assault, she told The Star.

“He forcibly kissed me out of nowhere,” Vaughn said.

In a statement to The Star, Brandan Davies, an attorney for Jackson Mahomes, said Mahomes “has done nothing wrong” and says there is “evidence refuting the claims of Jackson’s accuser.”

In the video, Mahomes’ actions tell another story, Vaughn claims. She went public to encourage police to take her claims seriously. And they should. The video has no audio. But Jackson Mahomes’ inappropriate behavior that led to allegations of assault and sexual assault could land him in hot water.

Grabbing a woman and forcibly kissing her is against the law. Shoving someone is wrong, too.

We’ll see if authorities agree.
