Lavish townhome once owned by jazz icon Billie Holiday lists for $14M. Take a look
The sophisticated home once owned by legendary singer Billie Holiday has landed on the New York City real estate market for $13.99 million.
The seven-bedroom, eight-bathroom residence is a marvel all on its own, with a chicness that the Upper West Side is known for.
“This historically significant home was built in early 1900 and meticulously restored and optimized with modern technology while preserving the classical detailing,” the listing on Douglas Elliman says.
“This special home is located adjacent to Central Park and the Reservoir. The Renaissance Revival townhome is inspired by influential architectural design from the early 1900 period.”
The house is 6,300 square feet and has multiple levels featuring amenities including:
Dramatic, high ceilings
“State of the art kitchen”
Formal dining room
Primary suite that takes up the third floor
Mud room
Media room with wallpaper designed by Lenny Kravitz
Outdoor garden
Both the primary suite and the garden area stand out.
“It’s like staying in the best hotel suite you can imagine and six-star living. The bathroom has heated marble floors, and every finish is top of the line,” listing agent Kelly Killoren Bensimon told Architectural Digest.
“The garden is a verdan Zen oasis and full of eclectic specimens. It’s a retreat from the craziness of the city.”
Holiday, who helped pioneer the way for Black artists, lived in the townhome until her death at the age of 44 in 1959, AD says. The Grammy Award-winning “Strange Fruit” artist was considered one of the best jazz artists of all time who was even inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
