The Last of Us season 2 has tapped Jeffrey Wright to reprise his video game villain.

Via Entertainment Weekly, the recently Oscar-nominated actor is officially coming back to the world of the fungal apocalypse as Isaac Dixon, who he portrayed through motion-capture in video game The Last of Us Part II.

HBO describes the character as the "quietly powerful leader of a large militia group who sought liberty but instead has become mired in an endless war against a surprisingly resourceful enemy".

In a previous interview with Total Film, Wright's lips seemed tightly sealed when asked if he could appear in the TV adaptation, replying: "Anything is possible. We shall see".

Released in 2020, The Last of Us Part II fast-forwarded four years from the events of the original game. Joel and Ellie's new peaceful lives in a Wyoming community are violently disrupted, with the survivors forced to dish out justice on those responsible.

Discussing the second season of The Last of Us with Collider, co-creator Craig Mazin did suggest that there will be differences to the game.

"Anybody that has played the first game, and then watches this season of television, will know that we are neither afraid to do what was in the game, nor afraid to do something that wasn't in the game, nor afraid to change things somewhat radically from the game," he said.

"We follow our hearts, when it comes to the process of adaptation, which is sometimes about fidelity and sometimes about new creation."

The Last of Us airs on HBO in the US, and on Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW in the UK. Season 2 is in production.
