Laramie softball goes 2-1 at Cheyenne Invite

Mar. 20—The Laramie High softball team finally got its season started at the rescheduled Cheyenne Invite on Tuesday in Cheyenne.

The Plainsmen went 2-1 at the one-day tournament, beating Cheyenne South 24-0 and Cheyenne Central 3-2 while falling to Cheyenne East 0-8.

Laramie bests South

LHS' day started with a bang, as the Plainsmen put the Bison away in 3 1/3 innings. Laramie exploded for 11 runs in the second, followed by nine in the third and four in the fourth. The team tallied 16 hits and made zero errors in the field.

Calli Cass tossed three innings on the mound, allowing two hits while striking out six. LHS collected 16 hits at the plate, including a triple and two doubles from Marisol Gomez.

Gomez had a team-high four RBIs, followed by three each from Cass and Abby Sanchez. Laramie struck out zero times and totaled nine walks.

Kaelin VanTassle and Charlie Mellish had South's only two hits. Mellish started the game in the circle, giving up six hits, five earned runs and four walks in two innings.

East tops Laramie

After an early morning outburst, LHS fell behind early against the Thunderbirds and couldn't overcome the deficit after allowing eight runs over the first three innings.

Carson Milam had the Plainsmen's only hit in the game on a double to center field. Laramie struck out seven times and made four defensive errors.

Paige Kuhn got the start in the circle, lasting 4 1/3 innings and allowing three earned runs. Kuhn struck out three and walked one.

Lillian Vallejo tossed four innings for East, allowing just one earned run with seven strikeouts. Rylee Stephenson, McKenzie Millar, Madelyn Artery and Alexa Luethy had one RBI each.

McKinney shines against Central

Central's Katie Hinz carved the Plainsmen for most of the day, totaling 10 strikeouts over five innings pitched. Hinz gave up just three hits, but struggled with control by walking six.

LHS' Brooklyn McKinney smashed a three-run homer in the third inning to put the Plainsmen in control. Marisol Gomez and Emilee Sirdoreus both scored on the home run.

Amanda Kricken started in the circle and earned the win for the Plainsmen, allowing just one earned run in five innings. Danielle Ramirez and Sirdoreus had LHS' only other hits in the game.

Laramie will return to play on the road at 3 p.m. Friday against Wheatland.
