Lake Travis had a brilliant day at the UIL state golf championship Monday, and that might spell trouble for six-time defending champion — and district rival — Westlake.

Led by Bennett Kuhns, the Cavaliers have a six-stroke lead over Dallas Jesuit heading into Tuesday's final round at White Wing Golf Club in Georgetown. Westlake finished the day 5-over par, 14 shots behind Lake Travis.

As for individual honors, Kuhns shot a 6-under par 66. Other Lake Travis golfers who had solid rounds were Luke Nolan (70), Mackey Beckett (71), Ethan Dufresne (72) and Elijah Galvan (73). Sterling Hurd (71) was the top player for Westlake. Defending state individual champion Adam Villanueva (73) and Whit Bartlett (74) kept the Chaparrals competitive.

Competing as an individual, Vandegrift's Jaxon Bandelier finished the day with a 1-under 71. Round Rock's Ben Montreuil shot a 4-over 76.

The 6A meet continues with an 8 a.m. tee time on Tuesday.

Class 5A: Smithson Valley takes control

In Class 5A, Smithson Valley took a commanding 11-stroke lead after the first day of competition at Legacy Hills Golf Club in Georgetown with a combined score of 10-under par. Frisco Wakeland shot a 1-over par to finish the day in second place while Georgetown is third with a score of 3 over. Frisco Wakeland's Luke Colton is the leader after shooting a 66 on the par-72 course. The top Georgetown golfer was Sam Stribling, who shot a 70.

Class 4A: another title for Wimberley's Donaldson?

In Class 4A, Wimberley senior Jaxon Donaldson, seeking his third state championship, found himself in a first-place tie with Konner Iglehart of Monahan after both shot a 68 on the par-72 course at the Legends Golf Course in Kingsland. Bridgeport has the team lead with a combined score of 3-over par. Wimberley finished 10 strokes off the pace.
