Who will Lady Vols basketball coach Kim Caldwell hire for staff at Tennessee?

Kim Caldwell is the new Lady Vols basketball coach. Now she has to put together a coaching staff.

Caldwell was hired Sunday and replaces Kellie Harper, who was fired April 1 after five seasons. Caldwell just finished her first year coaching Division I at Marshall, and led the Thundering Herd to to the Sun Belt Conference regular season and tournament titles. Marshall made its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1997.

"There's a lot to do, so we need to get a great staff put in place," Caldwell said Tuesday. "I need to form relationships with the current players that are here, and then we need to make some additions and get in the portal and start to recruit. So it's all hands on deck right now."

Tennessee has not announced Caldwell's staff although it appears some positions are being filled.

Here's what you need to know about who might be on Caldwell's staff at Tennessee.

Could Kim Caldwell's husband, Justin, join her staff?

Caldwell's husband, Justin, is also a basketball coach, though he has coached men's basketball for the last several years. Caldwell spent three seasons as an assistant at Glenville State before a stint as an assistant at California (Pennsylvania) in 2016-18. He was the Glenville State coach for five seasons before he stepped down to take an assistant position with Marshall men's basketball.

"To my husband, Justin, thank you for being my hype man and humbling me when I need that, too. Thank you for giving up a career you were exceptional at so I can chase my dream," Caldwell said. "Not a day will go by that I don't thank you for that."

It's uncertain whether Justin Caldwell will join his wife's staff, though her statement Tuesday hints it will not happen.

Who might join Kim Caldwell from her Marshall staff?

It was reported Tuesday that Caldwell's associate head coach at Marshall, Jenna Burdette, will be an assistant at Tennessee. Burdette was on Caldwell's staff at Glenville State from 2018-20, helping build the Pioneers into a championship program. Burdette coached alongside Caldwell's father, Scott Stephens, who was on her staff for her entire tenure at Glenville State until he died in 2021.

The Pioneers went 56-8 and won a pair of MEC championships while Burdette was on staff.

Burdette was a director of basketball operations at Northern Kentucky for the 2020-21 season before becoming an assistant coach at Marshall in May 2021.

"Our chemistry with each other starts with trust and it's non-basketball related," Burdette said when Caldwell was hired at Marshall. "I trust her with my life and I think she feels the same, so that's a good working relationship. In basketball, we think about things differently, which ultimately leads us to a better, more complete answer than if we were thinking the same way all the time."

Who might stay on Kim Caldwell's staff from Tennessee?

It's not typical for coaches to retain the previous coach's staff, but that's not to say it won't happen.

It's fair to conclude that Jon Harper, Kellie Harper's husband, won't be staying. Liza Fruendt, who was promoted from director of recruiting operations to an assistant last summer, likely doesn't have enough experience to remain.

CALDWELL IMPRESSION: Why Lady Vols, Danny White may have found next great basketball coach by hiring Kim Caldwell

Recruiting coordinator and assistant coach Samantha Williams played a role in gaining commitments from Tennessee's two high school recruits, Nyla Brooks and Finley Chastain. Both reopened their recruitment after Harper was fired.

Although Joy McCorvey is a rising star in the assistant coaching ranks, it would be surprising for two assistants to be retained from the previous staff. Williams would be a more valuable resource for Caldwell – that is, if she chooses to keep anyone from Harper's staff.
