Lady Gaga Returns to Her Red-Carpet Roots in a Mechanical “Car Part” Dress

Red-carpet fashion isn’t a race—but, if it were, Lady Gaga would clearly be the winner.

The Grammy-winning superstar made her grand return to the red carpet Thursday night to attend the world premiere of her upcoming HBO concert film, Gaga Chromatica Ball. While Gaga’s red-carpet style as of late has leaned more Old Hollywood than Artpop, the A Star Is Born star revived her notorious love of boundary-pushing, experimental clothing by dressing up in a magnificent “car part” dress designed by Selva.

The white gown itself was unique enough on its own, with its one shoulder strap, circular grommets, frayed hemline, and a large zipper running down the side of the skirt. But layered over the dress was yet another work of art—a mechanical contraption folding in around her figure that resembled an automobile bumper.

Later, Gaga reflected on the look on Twitter, writing, “On the red carpet I told them it was a car part. They said what kind and I said I don’t know, I’m not a mechanic.”

Inside the venue, Gaga changed outfits, swapping her gown for a long black dress with a sculptural lace bodice and a matching ornate eye mask.

During a Q&A at the premiere, she thanked her fans for their support. “I’m so incredibly lucky to be here with all of you. I’m so excited,” Gaga said, per The Hollywood Reporter. “This was such a special time. This tour [for her 2020 studio album, Chromatica] went on during a time that people didn’t think that you could tour [amid the pandemic] and stadiums were packed all over the world and they were sold out, all dressed up and dancing and singing. I’m just so excited for you all to see what we made up close.”
