When it comes to feeding your baby, there’s no one right answer. That’s why it’s so important to never feel like you have to figure things out all on your own. Whether you’re looking for products that will make feedings easier or you need help creating a schedule that works for you, don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Erica Campbell, a lactation specialist and also a former registered nurse, recommends using all the resources you can in the latest episode of In The Know: Milestones.

“My one piece of advice is that if you are struggling with anything in any way, ask for help,” Campbell explains. “There are so many resources available, there’s so many people you could talk to.”

Campbell goes on to share a few best practices for feeding your baby, including her insight on the breastfeeding versus formula feeding discussion.

“Obviously, with breastfeeding, there are the nutritional aspects, the antibodies,” Campbell starts, “but for some people, it’s not comfortable. It affects them mentally. With formula feeding, obviously, that costs money.”

Campbell further explains that breastfeeding isn’t necessarily painful, but she says it can cause tenderness and soreness. Fortunately, there are products that can help

“I really like things that can help with nipple care like the Medela Gel Pads,” Campbell says.

However, Campbell notes that the discomfort associated with breastfeeding shouldn’t last for more than about a week.

“As soon as you realize ‘Okay, this pain is for real’, ask for help,” she says.

When it comes to bottle-feeding, Campbell says that the Dr. Brown’s bottle is her go-to.

“I always recommend them. I think they are great bottles in general. And then to warm up the milk, Dr. Brown’s even has a good bottle warmer. Those are two key things you’ll definitely need for bottle feeding,” she explains.

One common misconception about feeding is that new parents think they have to choose one form of feeding over the other. The truth is, the options are plentiful.

“At the end of the day, you can feed your baby in so many different ways,” Campbell says. “If you just do whatever you can do and what feels right, then you can make it work.”
