La Quinta's Crist advances to CIF girls' golf finals with strong play in preliminaies

Sophomore Joanna Crist of La Quinta High School was the only desert golfer to advance out a preliminary stage of the CIF-Southern Section girls' golf individual postseason Monday.

Crist fired a 6-over 78 at Bear Valley Country Club in Victorville to tie for 20th in the field. Only the top 24 golfers from the event advanced to the CIF-SS individual finals at Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon in Beaumont.

Crist was one of four Desert Empire League players in the field in Victorville. Freshman Hannah Bagnell of Xavier Prep, who won the DEL league title by 13 shots the previous week, shot 85 Monday at Bear Valley. Freshman Liya Kakar of Palm Desert shot 87, while junior Bella Fuentez of Palm Desert shot 91. The cut for advancing to the finals came at 79.

Palm Desert and Xavier Prep will play Monday in the team regional tournament at Jurupa Hills Golf Club in Jurupa Valley, while Coachella Valley, the champions of the Desert Valley League, will play in another of the four regionals, this one at El Prado Golf Course in Chino. Teams advancing from the regional qualifiers will also play in at Morongo Golf Club in a qualifier for the CIF-SCGA tournament Nov. 9 at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills.
