KU coach: Tanaka Scott will miss one game; Trevor Wilson still suspended indefinitely

Kansas redshirt freshman receiver Tanaka Scott, who had criminal charges dismissed against him Friday by the Douglas County district attorney office following an arrest, will be suspended for the season opener, KU football coach Lance Leipold told reporters Monday.

Scott returned to practice on Monday, Leipold said at a news conference held in advance of Friday’s game against Tennessee Tech set for 7 p.m. in Booth Memorial Stadium.

Second-year KU coach Leipold addressed the matter briefly Monday in repeating Friday night’s news that he’d suspended redshirt junior receiver Trevor Wilson indefinitely.

Wilson — who along with Scott was arrested Thursday afternoon for suspicion of aggravated assault; use of a deadly weapon — was released from Douglas County jail on $5,000 bond Friday and has his first appearance in court Tuesday.

According to the Douglas County jail booking log, Lawrence police arrested Wilson and Scott, 20 at 12:34 p.m. Thursday. The arrest location was listed as the 2300 block of Haskell Avenue, which is near a QuikTrip gas station.

Laura McCabe, a spokesperson for the Lawrence Police Department, said Thursday night that a man told police that two men driving two different vehicles displayed two separate weapons then drove away.

Leipold told reporters he was “definitely disappointed — disappointed that those young men put themselves in that situation but equally disappointed in myself. As a head coach it’s my responsibility to put out messages and to put it on young men to make great decisions in wherever it may be, wherever that takes place, so obviously I haven’t done enough in my role to prevent those situations and I’ll continue to work to be better.”

Leipold declined further comment on the matter only to confirm he’d spoken with Wilson since the player’s arrest.

Asked what he said to Wilson, Leipold said: “OK. I’ve made my comment on the situation for right now. That’s between us and it’s something that will stay here, OK, ‘here’ meaning within the building, within our program.”

KU’s Luke Grimm and Douglas Emilien are listed as 1 and 2 on the depth chart at the slot position. Lawrence Arnold and Kevin Terry are listed 1-2 at the X position and Quentin Skinner and Steven McBride 1-2 at the Z slot.

Asked what he’s told the receiver group, Leipold said: “One of my closest friends in life and a former coach told me once, ‘You control what you can first of all. When there are suspensions you are going to put them in the same category as injuries.’

“Somebody else is going to get an opportunity to play, solidify themselves, make a mark and all that. So holistically as we’ve talked about many times, our offensive versatility will have to play its part as well. I’m very confident in the group we have there. There’s guys that are going to be there, but they were going to be in the rotation anyway. The guys that aren’t (going to be there) we have to move on from right now and get ourselves ready to go.”
