Knoxville Catholic wide receiver Braylon Harmon receives Tennessee football offer

At 5-foot-9 and 175 pounds, Braylon Harmon is used to people thinking he is “too small” for the highest echelon of college football.

“I've always been told I’m not big enough for that big of an offer,” Harmon told Knox News. “ I never would have thought it would have happened.”

Well, it happened for the senior Knoxville Catholic wide receiver who received a Tennessee football offer on Saturday.

“It's like a dream as every kid from Knoxville is a dream to play that big of a stage for that team and for them to actually want you,” Harmon said. “So being told that was just made me really happy.”

College decision

Harmon, who is verbally committed to Wofford, was invited to the Vols game on Saturday against UConn and received the news.

“They just told me that they were offering me and they would do whatever it takes to get me down there,” Harmon said.

Harmon committed to Wofford on July 20 after receiving the offer on June 8. He said that he is still committed but will “definitely weigh my options” based on a couple of factors.

“First, playing time definitely is a big thing because I want to go somewhere I can play,” Harmon said. “Second of all, I want to see how much they want me as like a coaching staff.”

He said that he didn’t know Tennessee wanted him as much until he met coaches on Saturday.

“When I got there, they showed so much love,” Harmon said. “All the coaches talked to me and it felt they felt really good to know that so it's really close right now.”

Harmon spoke with Tennnesse coach Josh Heupel during the Vol Walk. They discussed his performance in Catholic’s first-round playoff game.

How Braylon Harmon has played as a senior

Catholic coach Steve Matthews has sent Harmon’s film to the staff at Tennesee. Harmon said that the way he has counteracted size concerns has been with his consistent success on the field this year.

“Being a short receiver, I gotta be faster, I gotta make bigger plays, got to show them I can do that,” Harmon said. “I feel like I've done that this season more than I did last season and it's just changed the game.”

Harmon is best known for his prowess as a return specialist. He has 19 kickoff returns for 639 yards and four touchdowns and 17 punt returns for 357 yards and two touchdowns. He also has 55 catches for 792 yards and eight touchdowns along with 40 carries for 208 yards and two touchdowns overall.

He said that if he were to go to Tennessee, he would be more of an athlete in punt and kick returns. He was told by wide receivers coach Kelsey Pope to watch sophomore Squirrel White because that is the play style they want him to emulate.

Harmon’s family was also thrilled by the news of his offer.

“They loved it because they've always wanted me to stay close to home at least and again playing on that big of a stage, they love Tennessee,” Harmon said. “When they heard that news, they just they got excited as I did.”

Harmon is not the only player on Catholic with an offer from Tennessee. Sophomore wide receiver Tyreek King has a Vols offer along with Ole Miss, Arkansas, Purdue, Auburn, Kentucky, Michigan State, etc.

Catholic plays its next game in the quarterfinals on Friday at Memphis University School at 8 p.m. ET.
