Get to know UK signee DJ Wagner, and other top Kentucky men’s basketball recruiting links

Incoming Kentucky men’s basketball freshman DJ Wagner is one of the most heralded recruits that the Wildcats have landed.

A lot of this is to do with Wagner’s basketball talent: He’s the No. 3 overall player in the class of 2023 according to the 247Sports Composite, and possesses a three-level scoring ability that would make most players envious.

But a lot of the attention is also due to the context of Wagner’s arrival at Kentucky: John Calipari coached Wagner’s father, Dajuan Wagner, early in his tenure at Memphis. Louisville hired former star player Milt Wagner — the grandfather of DJ — as U of L’s director of player development and alumni relations last spring.

Last month, DJ completed the first three-generation grouping of McDonald’s All-Americans in history, following in the footsteps of Milt (1981) and Dajuan (2001).

Safe to say, there’s plenty of on- and off-court interest in Wagner ahead of his official arrival in Lexington, which will come ahead of a critical 2023-24 season for the Kentucky men’s basketball program.

But Wildcat fans have an opportunity to learn more about Wagner and his basketball background right now thanks to Tyler Glazier, a senior analyst at Pro Insight Basketball, as part of the Pro Insight Q&A series.

Glazier interviewed Wagner in Oregon last week after a practice prior to the Nike Hoop Summit, which Wagner competed in Saturday night with fellow 2023 UK signee Justin Edwards.

Both represented the victorious Team USA in the game.

Below is Pro Insight’s full interview with Wagner, which touches on everything from his past as a two-sport athlete to what he hopes to improve on before arriving at Kentucky.
