What to know about Murfreesboro area high school football spring practices, including dates

The majority of Murfreesboro area high school football teams will engage in spring practice beginning later this month and May.

Smyrna completed its spring practice last month and La Vergne finished it's spring schedule this week.

According to TSSAA rules, teams are permitted 12 days of practice during a 15-day school day period. Teams are permitted one scrimmage, which counts as one of the 12 days of practice. The first two days must consist of helmets only and full contact is not permitted on three consecutive days nor can last more than 45 minutes per day per group.

Here are things to know about area teams heading into spring workouts:

Murfreesboro area high school football spring practice dates

Blackman: April 30-May 17. Scrimmage: May 17 vs. Beech, 6:30.

Cannon Co.: April 22-May 3. Scrimmage: May 3 at DeKalb County, 6 p.m.

Eagleville: April 22-May 9. No scrimmage.

La Vergne: April 1-18. Intrasquad scrimmage on April 18, 5 p.m.

MTCS: May 6-17. No scrimmage.

Oakland: April 22-May 11. Scrimmage: May 11 vs. Knoxville Catholic, at Tennessee Tech, 11 a.m.

PCA: TBD

Smyrna: Completed (March 1-20).

Riverdale: April 22-May 9. Scrimmage: May 9 vs. Hendersonville, 6 p.m., site TBD.

Rockvale: May 1-17. Scrimmage: May 17 at Wilson Central, 6 p.m.

Siegel: April 9-May 16. Scrimmage: May 16 vs. Brentwood, time TBA.

Stewarts Creek: April 29-May 16. Scrimmage: May 16 vs. Independence, 6 p.m.

Depth for Murfreesboro area football teams can be issue in spring

With many football players being active in spring sports, some coaches can have a hard time gauging their squads during spring practice. '

This is especially true at smaller schools with limited rosters and more athletes playing multiple sports.

MTCS and Eagleville won't participate in spring scrimmages because of depth and Providence Christian is still undecided as to whether there will be enough players to warrant a spring practice.

Several Murfreesboro area football teams seeking starting quarterbacks

Many area schools graduated starting quarterbacks, leaving open competitions as a focus of spring practice.

Riverdale graduates Class 6A Mr. Football finalist and Gatorade Player of the Year Braden Graham. Blackman (Carter Gregory), Eagleville (Will Becker and Brody McLemore), La Vergne (Dominic Jones), MTCS (Yates Geren), Smyrna (Austin Morris), Rockvale (Brennan Mayhew) and Siegel (Thomas Santel and C.J. Cucchiara) also will have to replace their primary QBs from 2023.

Oakland returns two quarterbacks with extensive experience. Senior Kyler Creasy and junior Patrick Freeman split time last season on the way to a fourth consecutive BlueCross Bowl appearance. The two combined to go 115 of 170 for 1,451 yards and eight touchdowns in the run-heavy offense that was led by Southern Cal commitment Daune Morris.

Stewarts Creek's Jacob Jones also returns, as well as PCA senior Tatum Marks and Cannon County senior Kolby Miller.
