What to Know About 'Devil In Disguise: John Wayne Gacy'

John Wayne Gacy on Dec. 21, 1978, at the Des Plaines, Illinois, Police Department

John Wayne Gacy was one of America's most prolific and horrifying serial killers, and like Jeffrey Dahmer before him, will be the subject of a drama series.

Please note that the following contains subject matter that is highly disturbing and potentially triggering for survivors of sexual abuse and violence.

Showrunner, writer and executive producer Patrick Macmanus—the true crime auteur behind other acclaimed and fan-favorite miniseries including The Girl From Plainville and Dr. Death—will helm Devil In Disguise: John Wayne Gacy.

Gacy was a sex offender and murderer who was convicted of raping, torturing and killing 33 young men and boys between 1972 and 1978, though it's suspected he had even more victims who went unreported. Similar to Dahmer's victims, many of Gacy's were young gay men and boys.

He evaded suspicion for years, even entertaining at children's parties as a clown. While under investigation, Gacy frequently mocked the detectives in his case and even attempted to sue them in civil court.

Investigators eventually obtained warrants and discovered remains of Gacy's victims in the crawl space of his home, buried on his property and thrown into a river. Gacy claimed that most of the victims were runaways or prostitutes.

He was sentenced to death and executed in May 1994.
