What to Know About the Charming Cast of 'Sweet Magnolias' Ahead of the Premiere
There's not much we love more than a sweet, feel-good series that takes place in a fictional small town with characters we adore. No, we're not talking about Virgin River, Heartland, or Firefly Lane (though those all fit the description). This time, we're focusing on Sweet Magnolias and its charming (but sadly fake) town, Serenity! What's great about Sweet Magnolias is that we've come to love the characters as if they are our actual friends and as if their drama is our own. (Hey, there's nothing wrong with that!) But since we're so invested in their lives, we thought we'd go ahead and highlight the cast behind the characters we all love.
With the exciting news that Sweet Magnolias will be returning for season 3 on July 20, getting to know the Sweet Magnolias cast is even more important. There will be plenty of retuning characters we know and love and we can't wait to dive into all the small-town drama that's sure to ensue! Now that we know more or less who's returning, here's a list of the show's prime characters and the talented actors and actresses who play them. You might recognize some names from other shows, like Joanna García Swisher who started her career on Are You Afraid of the Dark?, or Heather Headley who has a background on Broadway! So, read on for the cast of Sweet Magnolias season 3!
Joanna García Swisher as Maddie Townsend
We know Maddie as a passionate mother, and member of the trifecta (the Sweet Magnolias). Maddie is a recent divorcee, but she hasn't let that stop her from going above and beyond for her kids, who are clearly the most important part of her life.
Joanna has many acting credits, so you've probably seen her on your screen at some point. Her roles include Vicki Appleby on Freaks and Geeks, Cheyenne Hart on Reba, and Sam on Are You Afraid of the Dark?
Heather Headley as Helen Decatur
Helen (also part of the Sweet Magnolias) has an infectious personality, which makes her a key part of the show. She believes in staying true to family values and holds her love for her tight knit community close to her heart. But don't let her kindness fool you—she's a wizard when it comes to the world of law, and she won't let anyone cross her or her friends.
You may have seen Heather on the series She’s Gotta Have It and Chicago Med. But if you're a Broadway fan, you know her as the singer turned actor from shows like Aida, The Color Purple, and The Lion King, where she played played Nala.
Brooke Elliott as Dana Sue Sullivan
Dana Sue is the third member of the Sweet Magnolias—best friends with Maddie and Helen. She's a talented chef with her own restaurant in the town of Serenity. Dana Sue is a single parent, which is a hot topic when it comes to the town gossip. The show consistently focuses and Dana Sue and her strained relationship with her daughter.
Brooke Elliott was the star of the hit show Drop Dead Diva, and has appeared in TV movies like Furst Born and Crazy Wonderful.
Justin Bruening as Cal Maddox
Cal used to play professional baseball during his prime, and uses his knowledge of the sport to coach the town's high school baseball team. He meets Maddie when one of her son's joins the team. Things get a little... awkward when Cal and Maddie develop feelings for one another. Cal proves to be a man with many layers as secrets from his past unveil as the show goes on.
Soap opera fans, rise up! You may have seen Justin in shows such as One Life to Live or All My Children. He's also had appearances in a few popular drama series, like Switched at Birth, Hawaii Five-0, and Grey’s Anatomy.
Chris Klein as Bill Townsend
Bill is Maddie's infamous ex-husband, who we immediately are introduced to as a cheater. His actions have strained his relationship not only with Maddie, but the three children he shares with her. Though it doesn't seem likely that Bill and Maddie will ever get back together, it's clear that his storyline is far from over: We see him try to re-strengthen his connection with his kids and navigate fatherhood all over again with his newborn daughter.
You might know Chris as Oz in the American Pie movies, but he also had roles in TV series like Welcome to the Captain, Wilfred and The Flash.
Chris Medlin as Isaac Downey
Isaac shares a love for cooking with Dana Sue, who he learns the ins-and-outs of the kitchen from. Isaac was pretty secretive at first, but we later learned that his questionable antics were due to him trying to find his birth parents. Once the Sweet Magnolias found this out, they banned together to help Isaac along his journey.
Chris is another cast member who has roots in Broadway shows, appearing in works like Mean Girls the Musical.
Anneliese Judge as Annie Sullivan
Annie is Dane Sue's daughter. The teen has some fire to her—which we see in the interactions she has with her mom. Ultimately, however, Annie has a big heart, which she learns to use when she is met with young love, heartbreak, and newfound friendships.
Anneliese is an up and coming actress whose first major role is in Sweet Magnolias.
Carson Rowland as Tyler Townsend
Tyler (who often goes by Ty in the show) is Maddie's oldest teenage son. He's a star high school baseball player, and is hoping to get a college scholarship for playing the sport. He's responsible for his age, and has to make many big decisions for himself and his family, including younger siblings. We see Tyler face an unfortunate injury in season 2, which impacts his ability to play for his team.
This isn't Carson's first time in a series. He has roles in American Housewife, Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin and Ghost Tape.
Logan Allen as Kyle Townsend
Kyle is the youngest son of Maddie and Bill. He's deemed as different from the rest of his family due to his love of musicals and acting. Unable to relate to his father (who loves sports) and his athletic brother, he finds solace in confiding in Noreen—which makes things a bit awkward for everyone at first.
Logan has had a few guest roles before his time on Sweet Magnolias, appearing in the shows Talia in the Kitchen and Creepshow.
Bianca Berry Tarantino as Katie Townsend
Katie is the only daughter and youngest child between Maddie and Bill. She's a spunky toddler who will make you melt with her adorable one-liners and her wild antics.
Bianca may be young, but this isn't her first time behind a screen! She had minor roles in the series Swamp Thing, NCIS, and The Gifted.
Jamie Lynn Spears as Noreen Fitzgibbons
Noreen was the immediate villain of Sweet Magnolias, whom we were introduced to as Bill's "mistress" right from the start. Though she's not technically in the clear, we start to warm up to her a bit when she forms a connection with Kyle.
Jamie Lynn Spears was the iconic Zoey Brooks on the Nickelodeon series, Zoey 101! She's also the younger sister of pop-star Brittney Spears.
