Indianapolis police were involved in a shooting near the Indiana State Fairgrounds on Friday morning that left one man injured and listed in serious condition, according to Officer Samone Burris.
No officers were injured and police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the shooting.
Officers responded at about 11 a.m. to the 3900 block of Caroline Avenue, a neighborhood near East 38th Street and Keystone Avenue.
Police were dispatched after hearing reports of shots being fired in the area. After arriving, they came upon a man who accused of firing a weapon from inside a home. The call was placed by an anonymous source, police said.
The man initially complied with police orders to get on the ground, placing the weapon on the ground and out of his hands. He was then ordered to get up and move toward the officers. He started doing so, then turned and ran back toward the firearm and an officer shot him, police said.
The family later told officers the man has suffered mental health issues in the past.
Just before 1 p.m., a SWAT vehicle arrived on scene. Police later said it was there for a "safety sweep as a precaution" and that there is no active threat.
The area near Millersville Drive and Caroline Avenue will be closed for several hours, police said.
