Knife-wielding man had baby in arms moments before he was shot by cops in upstate New York: report

Police in upstate New York shot and killed a knife-wielding man who had been holding a baby in his arms, officials and a witness said.

The deadly shooting happened Tuesday afternoon outside a home on River St. near West Anne St. in Oneonta, New York State Police said.

Local cops responded to a domestic disturbance call just before 1 p.m., and encountered a man armed with a knife, authorities said.

“During the course of the engagement with the subject, an officer fired, striking the subject,” police said.

The man had been holding a two-year-old child and was with a woman when police came to the house, according to Kevin Marcewicz, a neighbor.

“When they had their guns pulled on him, I thought they were Tasers,” he told the Daily Star of Oneonta.

Marcewicz added that the woman with him was his fiancée, and the toddler was their son.

During the confrontation, police and the woman tried to get the child away from the man, Marcewicz told the Daily Star. Then at some point the child fell to the ground, and an officer opened fire.

“I don’t even think he realized he had gotten shot at first,” the neighbor said. “He was still talking.”

Marcewicz captured the aftermath on video, the Daily Star wrote. In the footage, the man with the knife is heard asking for help, and said, “They shot me in the spine!”

He was rushed to Albany Medical Center, where he later died, authorities said.
