Kirsten Dunst has revealed that she wasn’t asked back for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The actress played the character of Mary-Jane Watson in Spider-Man in 2002 alongside Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker, as well as the sequels in 2004 and 2007.

In the 2021 instalment of the superhero franchise, No Way Home, Maguire reprised his Peter Parker role alongside Andrew Garfield and current Spider-Man Tom Holland.

While there was speculation that previous Mary-Jane actresses Dunst and Emma Stone might also return, this never came to fruition.

Now in a new interview with GQ, Dunst was asked if she was ever asked to come back for the film, to which she said, "No, no. I would have."

The actress went on to say that she likes the idea of revisiting the Mary-Jane and Peter Parker relationship in an interesting way.

She said: "It would be funny to be like, OK, let’s take Tobey [Maguire] and I and do it in a weird indie way where it’s like a different kind of superhero film. Like how they did that movie Chronicle. It would be cool."

Dunst has always been open about her desire to return to the MCU, and in 2022, she said: "There’s still time. I mean, listen, no one asked me about anything but I do think that… I mean, this multi-universe just keeps going on and on. I feel like that could happen."

In an interview with Variety, she also reminisced about her experiences of being in Spider-Man and her first meeting with director Sam Raimi.

"It was so innocent, the reasons I wanted to be in that film. The story lived within Sam in such a deep way that I needed to be a part of that feeling, I guess," she said.

Dunst is starring in upcoming action film Civil War, alongside her real-life husband, Killers of the Flower Moon’s Jesse Plemons.

The film is set in a dystopian America and follows a group of journalists who attempt to reach Washington before rebel factions attack the White House.

Civil War will be released in cinemas on April 12.
