Kirk Herbstreit Reveals Gut Feeling For College Football’s Future

With Texas and Oklahoma on their way to the SEC, conference realignment is still dominating the discussion in college football, even with the 2021 season kicking off in less than two weeks. Everyone is trying to figure out where the sport is headed and when it might get there, but no one seems to have the answer.

Even ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit can’t perfectly predict what college football will look like 10, or even five years from now. However, he does have an inkling of what might happen.

In an appearance on the “Pat McAfee Show” on Monday, Herbstreit explained that he could see college football boiling down to just a few larger conferences that end up splitting from the NCAA and forming their own governing body.

Although he doesn’t think something like that will happen overnight, he’s certain that the sport is headed for big changes in the coming years.

“It feels like we’re heading to four premiere, big, huge 16-team conferences and it feels like those four conference maybe will pull away one day from the NCAA. Then, go out and hire a commissioner, whoever that might be, and create their own world,” Herbstreit said. “That could happen. I don’t think next week, but maybe in the next 3-5 years that could happen.”

Herbstreit isn’t the only one to have posited this theory of impending super-conferences in college football. After news broke that Oklahoma and Texas were headed to the SEC, eyes immediately turned to other leagues to see if they had plans of their own to pick up new schools.

No other major realignment has taken place just yet, but it seems like the Sooners and Longhorns jumping ship from the Big 12 is just the tip of the iceberg.

As Herbstreit says, change won’t happen overnight, but one thing is for sure: college football looks to be headed for a major shake-up.
