Kings and queens of the court: 39 South Shore tennis players starring this spring

It's just about that time of year. The South Shore's kings and queens of the court are at the top of their games.

The high school tennis season is in the home stretch. Playoff-bound teams are readying for their most crucial matches.

We reached out to local high school boys and girls tennis coaches to get a snapshot of which players are starring so far this spring. Here are the names we received.

Tara Kamil, Abington

Kamil is the Green Wave's second singles player. Coach Bridget Wakelin said she "has proven that consistency is a key factor to success."

Nathan Ludlam, Abington

Four-year varsity player has "improved tremendously," said coach Bridget Wakelin, and is now leading the team as its top singles player.

Haily Pham, Braintree

The first singles player has been with the team for five years. She'll be studying engineering at Virginia Tech in the fall.

Jolin Yang, Braintree

Senior captain has won 88 percent of her matches as the Wamps' second singles player.

Emma Townsend, Braintree

Junior has a winning record at third singles for the Wamps. Julie McKinney said she has "great expectations to lead the team next year."

Nicole Kimball, Bridgewater-Raynham

Junior captain is undefeated in first singles this season (12-0). She has a 49-6 overall career record, 34-1 against league opponents. Said coach Bob Peterson, "She is a leader by example and always sets the pace for our team."

Banks Beck, Bridgewater-Raynham

Coach Daniel Cooley calls this sophomore "a remarkable tennis player with insane accuracy and shots." Beck owns an 8-3 record for the Trojans this season. "His matches are just fun to watch, to say the least," Cooley said.

Thomas Hammond, Bridgewater-Raynham

This team captain is the Trojans' lone senior and four-year varsity player. He is the team's second singles player. Said coach Daniel Cooley, "He is the perfect example of a player that any coach would love to have on their team."

Wyatt Cooley, Bridgewater-Raynham

Eighth grader is teetering between first doubles and second/third singles in his first varsity season. Said coach Daniel Cooley, "Though slightly younger than most of his teammates, Wyatt plays just as competitively."

Andrew Wagner, Bridgewater-Raynham

Eighth grader plays at first doubles for the Trojans in his first varsity season. His tandems have a 6-4 record this season. Said coach Daniel Cooley, "His communication skills with all of his partners help to make the partnership gel in very cohesive ways."

Caroline Sutliffe, Duxbury

Senior has been the Dragons' top player this spring. A two-time Patriot League MVP, Sutliffe entered this season with a 53-1 career record.

Paulina Leskow and Sam Curtis, Hanover

These two combine to form one of the strongest first doubles teams in the Patriot League. Said coach Peter Alvarenga, "Their experience and leadership has been important to the team throughout the season."

Sam Ruddick, Hingham

Sophomore plays first singles for the Harbormen. An All-Scholastic pick from a year ago, Ruddick went 17-2 overall as a freshman.

Sanya Khadivi, Hingham

Junior plays second singles this season. She went 12-7 overall (10-2 in Patriot League matches) as an All-Scholastic selection last spring.

Sammy Price and Gabi Magner, Hingham

Both Price and Magner have histories playing third singles for the Harbormen, but they combined to only lose one match in doubles this season.

Olivia Gilbert, Marshfield

Freshman is undefeated at first singles this year.

Connor McNaughton, Middleboro

McNaughton is a team captain for the Sachems this season. Said coach Adam Pelletier, "He is a high-character person who exemplifies what it means to be a student-athlete."

Melody Tran, Milton

Sophomore captain is 8-1 on the season. Her best performance this spring came against Bay State Conference foe Natick, in which Tran's match went three sets and spanned two hours.

Catalina Abboud, Milton

Junior is 8-1 at second singles for the Wildcats. She came into the action this spring fresh off a 15-0 sophomore season.

Camila Abboud, Milton

Coach Maggie Radley wrote that this "freshman is on fire!" Abboud started as a doubles player following an injury that kept her from competing until this year, but recently moved to singles and is 4-0. "Camila is ready to break out," Radley said.

John Dickens, Milton

Dickens, unbeaten against Bay State Conference competition (9-0), is the Wildcats' top singles player. He is a two-time league All-Star selection.

Nicole Makarewicz, Pembroke

Sophomore was named Patriot League MVP last spring and is currently 9-0 at first singles for the Titans. Said coach Jessica Walls, "She is a tenacious player who is disciplined and strategic, especially at the baseline."

Ruth Dannison, Pembroke

Junior is 10-1 at second singles for the Titans this season. She is a two-time Patriot League All-Star. Said coach Jessica Walls, "she often wins points with her groundstrokes, particularly her forehand, which are hit with tremendous pace and depth."

Jason Debella, Pembroke

Sophomore moved into the Titans' first singles spot this season. Coach Gary Pina said Debella "will be a No. 1 to contend with in the next couple of years."

Charles Ruggiero, Plymouth South

Senior captain has three years of varsity experience. He owns an 11-4 record in first singles this season, after going 15-3 with a league All-Star bid at third single as a junior.

Daniel Lyons, Plymouth South

Senior Captain has three years of varsity experience, and a 13-3 record this season. As a junior, he went 14-1 and was a league All-Star at first doubles.

Linda Thea, Randolph

Sophomore captain is 7-1 at second singles for the Blue Devils. Said coach Matt Cutter, "She's one of the nicest players in the league."

Kayden Gerstel, Rockland/East Bridgewater

Freshman from East Bridgewater is the team's top singles player. Said coach Richard MacAllister, "He's very calm and collected, showing he's mature beyond his years. His composure and methodical approach to the game is one of his strong suits."

Nicholas Mesheau, Rockland/East Bridgewater

Senior captain from East Bridgewater is back to form after suffering debilitating injury in soccer. Said coach Richard MacAllister, "He is a naturally gifted athlete who moves exceptionally well on the court."

Muhammad Asad, Rockland/East Bridgewater

Junior captain from Rockland plays first doubles for the Bulldogs. Said coach Richard MacAllister, "He's a true student athlete who leads by example both on the court and in the classroom."

Lexi Washburn, Scituate

Senior is a four-year varsity player. Said coach Barbara Horne, "She's a leader in every sense of the word, plays with a quiet determination."

Ben DiPesa, Scituate

Senior captain is the Sailors' top singles player. He is the reigning Patriot League Fisher Division MVP who went 15-4 last season.

Calvin Anderson, Scituate

Anderson is the Sailors' No. 2 singles player.

Cooper McDonald, Scituate

McDonald is Scituate's No. 3 singles player.

Summer Holmes, Silver Lake

Senior captain was once a successful doubles partner, but transitioned to singles this year for the Lakers. She owns an 8-7 record with tie-breaker wins over against Scituate and North Quincy.

Sophie Ennis and Maddy Morris, Whitman-Hanson

This first doubles tandem is 8-2 on in their debut season together. Ennis has played doubles for three years and Morris is in her first.
