King Charles is sharing a major update following his cancer diagnosis.

Buckingham Palace shared an announcement about the monarch's health on April 26, revealing that the King is set to return to public-facing duties soon. The news came with a new portrait of the King, 75, and Queen Camilla, 76, taken by Millie Pilkington in honor of the upcoming first anniversary of their coronation on May 6.

The latest statement marks the biggest update on King Charles' health since the palace announced on Feb. 5 that he had cancer following his treatment for a benign enlarged prostate in January (a spokesman clarified he does not have prostate cancer). Learn more about the King's plans to return to royal duties and how his cancer treatment is progressing.

Has King Charles completed his cancer treatment?

Buckingham Palace said that the King’s treatment is ongoing and shared a positive sentiment from his doctors.

"His Majesty’s treatment program will continue, but doctors are sufficiently pleased with the progress made so far that The King is now able to resume a number of public-facing duties. Forthcoming engagements will be adapted where necessary to minimize any risks to His Majesty’s continued recovery," a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said.

The palace didn’t disclose when the King’s treatment might be completed.

"It is too early to say, but His Majesty’s medical team are very encouraged by the progress made so far and remain positive about The King’s continued recovery," the spokesperson explained.

When will King Charles return to public-facing work?

King Charles and Queen Camilla will visit a cancer treatment center on April 30, where they will meet medical specialists and patients. It’s understood that the center has not been directly involved with the monarch’s medical care.

The visit is significant as the King’s official public engagement since his cancer diagnosis was announced on Feb. 5, though he has continued working behind the scenes and hosting small audiences in the months since. He also greeted well-wishers after church on Easter Sunday.

The visit on Tuesday is set to be the first of several engagements planned for the King in upcoming weeks.

The palace also revealed that King Charles and Queen Camilla will host the Emperor and Empress of Japan for a state visit in June at the invitation of the King’s government. Further details about the state visit are expected in due course, and King Charles’ participation in it is understood to be subject to medical advice when it gets closer.
