The actress and director is in Indianapolis to speak at Fall Fest 2023 and Slammin’ Rhymes Challenge XVII, taking place Nov. 18 from noon to 4 p.m. at Central Library, 40 E. St. Clair St. It’s a program from the Indianapolis Public Library’s African-American History Committee, supporting the Center for Black Literature & Culture.

Before her talk, Fields, 54, wanted to take a moment to post a birthday message for Epps from his hometown.

In a video released to Instagram, Fields shared how proud she is of him for his work on The Upshaws, the Netflix show on which she costars as Regina Upshaw.

"I wanted to go live and sing Happy Birthday to Mike Epps and also and to acknowledge the extraordinary work that my costar who also created the show with Regina Hicks and Wanda Sykes," Fields said.

The Upshaws is a show created and executively produced by Mike Epps that takes place in Indianapolis. Epps told IndyStar earlier this month that the show would return for a fifth season.

"We are in Indianapolis and the thing about Mike Epps and his gorgeous wife, they are so committed to this city. How many of you know about what they're doing with HGTV and Buy Back the Block?" Fields asks the applauding crowd.

Fields is talking about his latest Indianapolis project, Buying Back the Block, a show with HGTV where Epps and his wife, Kyra Epps, rehab houses on his childhood block.

The couple's goal is to “revitalize the struggling neighborhood and bring back the charm, community and character that Mike valued growing up,” according to HGTV.
