Kevin Pillar Shares Update After Terrifying Hit By Pitch

The New York Mets stopped a three-game skid with a big win at the NL East rival Atlanta Braves last night. The game wasn’t without its unfortunate moments for the team, with the most graphic moment coming when outfielder Kevin Pillar was drilled in the face by a pitch.

Pillar has been a nice surprise for the Mets, who have dealt with numerous injuries during the young season. He’s batting .250 with two home runs and eight RBIs, and has played a solid centerfield for the team, helping bolster a questionable defense.

In the top of the seventh inning, with the bases loaded in Mets up 1-0, Braves pitcher Jacob Webb accidentally hit Pillar square in the nose with a 94-mile per hour fastball. He suffered a very gruesome bloody nose, which was pretty graphic on the broadcast.

Luckily, Kevin Pillar was able to walk off the field after the incident. After the game on Monday night, he issued an update on his Twitter, saying that he is “doing fine” after being hit by the pitch.

That is a major relief for the Mets, which pulled out a big 3-1 win in Atlanta. The team has been beset by numerous injuries, especially in the outfield.

Starting pitcher Taijuan Walker, one of three Mets starters who have an ERA of 2.72 or better, left after three scoreless innings due to tightness in his side on Monday night. It sounds like a similar issue to the right side tightness that has sidelined two-time Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom, who is on the 10-day injured list.

On Sunday, outfielder Michael Conforto suffered a strained hamstring and is on the 10-day IL. That same day, second baseman Jeff McNeil also suffered a strained hamstring and was added to the IL.

Brandon Nimmo, the team’s starting centerfielder, suffered a bone bruise on his left index finger, and was placed on the 10-day IL on May 5. Third baseman J.D. Davis has been out with a hand sprain since May 3.

Throw in longer term injuries to pitchers Noah Syndergaard, Carlos Carrasco, and Seth Lugo, and the Mets have plenty of issues to overcome. If they can stay in contention, and right now they remain a game up on the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East, the cavalry could be coming in Queens.

Update: The Mets have updated Kevin Pillar’s status, saying that he has suffered “multiple nasal fractures.”

Hopefully this doesn’t sideline him for too long, especially given how thin the Mets are in the outfield.
