What are the three issues that you see as most important to your district and what will you do to address them?

Rural broadband expansion — I helped start the GREAT grants. My district has received over $20 million so far. Medicaid expansion — I helped lead the charge to get it passed in the Senate in 2022. Constituent service: We have resolved 95% of calls for assistance from my district.

At a time when costs are rising, state government has a surplus. How should it be used?

North Carolina needs to continue to lower taxes on its citizens. We have done so in the past and it is resulting in surplus funds. We need to continue to fund capital projects across our state. Surplus should not be used for recurring expenses.

Will you vote for Medicaid expansion in North Carolina?

Yes.

What has the legislature gotten right, and what has it gotten wrong, about public education in North Carolina?

The increase in education funding has been good. The increases in pay for all school employees has been good but we need to continue to make our pay more competitive compared to neighboring states (i.e. Georgia.) We need to pass a statewide bond or otherwise fund capital improvements to K-12 schools. We need to allocate additional capital dollars on top of lottery funds.

Should North Carolina change its abortion laws? How?

Abortion should be banned starting at some point during the first trimester.

Please add anything else voters should know about your position on the legality or availability of abortion in North Carolina.

I believe the current law allowing abortions up to 20 weeks is too long. I don’t believe the votes exist in the General Assembly for an abortion ban, but shortening the period that abortion is legal is a measure I believe is supported by the vast majority of citizens in my district.

Should medical marijuana be legalized in North Carolina?

Undecided.

What, if anything, should the legislature do to shape curriculum dealing with topics of race, sexuality and gender?

Our schools need to be in the business of teaching math, science, history and other academic subjects. As race, sexuality and gender relate to these teachings I have no problem. However, our schools need to avoid teaching about these subjects as stand alone issues. These are very touchy social topics and we need to avoid any attempt to sway opinion of these as stand alone issues.

Do you accept the results of the 2020 presidential election?

Yes.
