Kentucky secures first commitment for 2023 women’s basketball recruiting class

As the University of Kentucky women’s basketball team prepares to tip off a 2022-23 season rife with unknowns amid 10 newcomers on the roster, the Wildcats are also continuing to build for the future.

Toward that end, third-year head coach Kyra Elzy received her first commitment for the recruiting class of 2023 on Friday night in the form of Jordy Griggs, a four-star wing from California.

The 6-foot-2 Griggs accepted Kentucky’s scholarship offer over bids from Auburn, Georgia Tech, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech, among others. Originally from Moreno Valley, Calif., and Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, Calif., Griggs now plays for Montverde (Fla.) Academy after recent high school stops in Alabama and Georgia.

Griggs is known as a long, athletic perimeter player capable of performing at multiple positions. In 2021, Griggs was among 34 players invited to compete for a spot on USA Basketball’s U16 National Team.

Jordy Griggs from Montverde (Fla.) Academy is the first player to commit to Kentucky for the class of 2023.

The Wildcats tip off their 2022-23 season Nov. 7 at home against Radford, following an exhibition game Nov. 2 against Pikeville.

UK will take the floor with 10 players who were not part of last year’s Wildcats who won the SEC Tournament and competed in the NCAA Tournament. That large group of newcomers includes six freshmen and four transfers.
