Kensington Palace Releases Striking New Birthday Photo of Princess Charlotte Taken by Mom Kate Middleton

Prince William and Kate Middleton’s daughter, Princess Charlotte, is growing up right in front of my eyes.

Today, the young royal turned nine years old. In honor of the special occasion, the Prince and Princess of Wales shared a brand-new portrait of Princess Charlotte on social media.

The photo features a grown-up looking Princess Charlotte in an adorable red cardigan, blue top and denim skirt. And is it just me or has the princess been growing out her hair?

The striking photo was taken by Princess Catherine herself (she also snapped the recent birthday photo of Prince Louis) and comes on the heels of the "photo controversy" surrounding several of the royal photos being flagged by photo agencies. Clearly, the royal fam is making a point that it was all "much ado about nothing" by continuing to release new pictures taken by the princess.

The caption read, "Happy 9th Birthday, Princess Charlotte! Thank you for all of the kind messages today." And it gave photo credit to Princess Catherine. (FYI the caption is quite similar to Louis's bday post which read, "Thank you for all the kind wishes today.")

Similar to Prince Louis’s sixth birthday, many believe that Princess Catherine followed through with her annual tradition of making a birthday cake from scratch. The royal likely made a celebratory dessert for her daughter, despite revealing her cancer diagnosis in an emotional video message back in March.

Back in 2019, Princess Catherine appeared on Mary Berry’s A Berry Royal Christmas special and revealed that she “loves” making her children’s birthday cakes from scratch. It has become a household tradition for the Wales fam.

“I love making the cake. It’s become a bit of a tradition that I stay up ’til midnight with ridiculous amounts of cake mix and icing and I make far too much,” she said at the time. “But I love it.”

Wishing a very happy birthday to Princess Charlotte!
