On June 18, 2021, the Boston Celtics traded All-Star point guard Kemba Walker to the Oklahoma City Thunder. But as free agency gets underway, it appears Walker will never play a minute in OKC.

According to ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, Walker has agreed to a contract buyout with the Thunder. Once he clears waivers, Walker is expected to sign with the New York Knicks.

Walker is coming off a down year with the Celtics. His 19.3 points per game where his lowest since the 2014-15 season.

The 2020-21 season was the first in five years where Walker missed the All-Star Game. For Knicks fans, Walker certainly doesn’t have nearly the appeal that had just two years ago.

In the three seasons before the 2019 free agency period, Kemba Walker was one of the fastest rising stars at the point guard position in the league. He made three straight All-Star appearances – deservedly so – while averaging over 23.5 points and 5.7 assists per game for the Charlotte Hornets.

Boston eagerly signed Walker on a sign-and-trade with the Hornets in 2019. But despite making the All-Star Game in his first season, his production quickly nosedived.

In two years in Boston, Walker averaged 19.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game – markedly lower than his final three years in Charlotte.

After the Boston Celtics reorganized their front office, Walker was offloaded to the Thunder in a trade.

He’s now poised to join the Knicks, giving them the point guard they needed all of last year.

Is Kemba Walker to the Knicks a good pairing?
