Kelly Stafford, wife of Lions QB Matthew Stafford, apologizes for calling Michigan a ‘dictatorship’

Kelly Stafford, the wife of Detroit Lions star quarterback Matthew Stafford, quickly backpedaled Thursday after repeatedly calling Michigan a “dictatorship” in an Instagram rant against the state’s pandemic health regulations.

In a statement posted to her account hours after the initial Instagram story, Stafford said sorry, writing that she “got caught up in the heat of the moment.”

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has responded to a surge in coronavirus cases by announcing tightened rules that barred indoor dining and shuttered businesses when they took effect on Wednesday.

Stafford said in her video that “shutting down all these small businesses — things that people have worked their life for — shutting them down again is not the answer.” In her apology, she wrote that she doesn’t “know the answer” and “won’t pretend to.”

Over the summer, she apologized for previous criticism of Colin Kaepernick, who kneeled during the “The Star-Spangled Banner” to protest racism and police brutality.

Her husband, Matthew, has played for the Lions since the franchise drafted him first overall in 2009. The gunslinger has thrown more than 270 touchdown passes and logged more than 40,000 yards through the air during his time in Detroit, but he has never won a playoff game.
