Kelly Ripa, 53, Ponders Abandoning Her Blonde as She Says Her Hair ‘Wants to Be Gray’

Ripa laments that the process of dyeing her hair blonde is 'endless'

Kelly Ripa is considering a major hair change.

On the Wednesday, April 24 episode of her morning talk show Live! With Kelly and Mark, the host said that her “endless” hair dyeing process makes her wonder about going gray.

“I got my hair colored last night and I cannot tell you how long it takes now to cover my gray hair,” Ripa, 53, told her husband and cohost Mark Consuelos. “It's an endless… you came in last night like, ‘Are you done?’”

“It takes hours and hours,” Ripa continued. “And I swear this morning, I still see gray hair. My hair wants to be gray. It just wants to be gray.”

Consuelos then asked his wife what she thinks about “letting the gray happen,” after which Ripa takes a long pause.

“You’re not ready yet,” he offered.

“No, I would do it,” Ripa said. “I just don’t think, you know, you’ve seen my gray hair. It’s not like a gorgeous silver or a pretty white. It’s almost like, translucent. It’s almost translucent in its quality, which I think is weird. It’s almost like colorless hair.

“So maybe keep that,” Consuelos said, referring to Ripa’s blonde hair.

Ripa previously shared that she embraced her grays during the COVID-19 pandemic, but ultimately agreed with Cher, who had said that gray hair wasn’t for her.

"During the early days of the pandemic, I had embraced my gray hair privately while publicly I was using brown eyeshadow to paint my roots some shade that wasn't Santa Clause white," Ripa told her cohost Ryan Seacrest during a January 2022 episode of Live! With Kelly and Ryan.

"But in real life, I go, 'Oh, I look great with gray hair, you can barely tell,'" she joked while shaking her head 'no.'

She continued, "Cher was saying that gray hair is not for her. She is not caving in, she doesn't care about the trend — you know, people are embracing their gray hair all over the place. Everybody's embracing their gray hair.”

"I need to dye my hair," Ripa explained, clarifying that going gray is a personal decision. "I think certain people look great with their gray hair. I think it depends on the person. I really do."

In July 2023, Ripa showed off her newly highlighted blonde hair.

“A bit more blonde for @kellyripa before vacation!” her long-time hairstylist Ryan Trygstad captioned an Instagram post of the star’s fresh look.

"My gray hair became more prominent than my dark hair," Ripa said on Live! back in 2021, adding, "So we kept it blonder because it was more practical."
