Manager Mike Matheny strolled to the mound Wednesday in the seventh inning of the Royals’ 5-2 win over the Tigers and was serenaded by boos from the 11,016 fans at Kauffman Stadium.

Matheny had come to remove relief pitcher Amir Garrett from the game as Tigers infielder Javier Báez was waiting on deck.

Fans were not upset with the pitching change itself. They were just hoping to see the latest chapter of the feud between Báez and Garrett, which .dates to their days in the National League.

To be fair to Matheny, he may have avoided a dugout-clearing event.

As it turned out, Garrett and Báez ended up jawing at each other as the pitching change was in progress.

The animosity between the players began in 2018 with a strikeout, big talk and teammates running from their dugouts. At the time, Garrett was with the Reds and Báez played for the Cubs.

In the 2021 season, the two went after each other when benches cleared. Báez was restrained by former Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas.

Garrett was suspended for that incident. Last July, Báez hit an walk-off single and didn’t celebrate. Instead he taunted Garrett and was fined by MLB.

After the 2021 season, Garrett was traded to the Royals and Báez signed a free-agent deal with the Tigers. That meant they’d continue to see a lot of each other.

Earlier this month, during a game in Detroit, Garrett and Báez once again exchanged, uh, pleasantries.

The Royals will face the Tigers nine more times, all in September, so there will be more opportunities for the quarrel to continue.
