KC Roos men’s, women’s basketball blown out by South Dakota State Jackrabbits

It was a tough Thursday night for both the Kansas City men’s and women’s basketball programs. After dropping three in a row, the Kansas City men’s basketball team (11-19, 7-10 Summit League) traveled to Brookings, South Dakota, for a date with the second place Jackrabbits in hopes of snapping that skid.

The road trip began with another loss, as South Dakota State defeated Kansas City 73-50. The Jackrabbits took a 21-18 lead on a Zeke Mayo three-pointer with 5:38 to play in the first half and never gave it up again.

Mayo scored 13 points with six assists and five rebounds. Matt Dentlinger led the Jackrabbits in scoring with 16 points.

South Dakota State (18-11, 13-4) outrebounded the Roos 38-28 and held them to 32.8% shooting from the field. RayQuawndis Mitchell led Kansas City with 13 points, but shot 4-for-13 from the field.

Tyler Andrews scored in double figures for the second time in 2023 and also added five rebounds for the Roos.

Kansas City will be back in action against South Dakota at 7 p.m. on Saturday. That game will be streamed on ESPN3.

Kansas City women’s basketball dominated by South Dakota State

The Roos dropped their seventh consecutive game Thursday night with an 86-52 home loss to South Dakota State.

This contest was over early on as the conference’s first place team held a 10-point lead at the end of the first quarter. Haleigh Timmer led the Jackrabbits with 19 points and was one of four players to score in double figures on the road. The Jackrabbits also outrebounded the Roos by 10 and connected on 45% of their three-pointers.

Manna Mensah had 15 points for Kansas City (7-21, 3-14) but also six turnovers. E’Lease Stafford was the only other player for Kansas City to score in double figures.

Kansas City will be back in action at home against South Dakota at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
