Since the 2021 trade that brought Sam Mewis to the Kansas City Current was made, fans have anticipated seeing her on the field in KC. It looks like they’ll have to wait even longer.

The Current announced on Monday that they have bought out Mewis’ original contract and signed her to a new deal that runs through 2023. Per their release, the new deal “is focused on her recovery and future.”

Mewis took to Instagram and Twitter to provide an update on her potential return to play in 2023, saying that she recently had another knee surgery and doesn’t have a timetable to return.

“I gave everything I had to rehabbing my knee after my last procedure in 2021,” Mewis wrote. “This has been a really difficult time for me personally and I’ve been devastated to be away from soccer for so long. The Current have been extremely patient and supportive of me throughout this process.”

The way the Current have handled the offseason has given the team options to rely on outside of Mewis. By adding Morgan Gautrat and Vanessa DiBernardo to the midfield that had taken the Current to the NWSL Championship game, they more than covered for any prolonged Mewis absence.

Now, Mewis will rehab and potentially try to get back on the field again. In addition to Mewis, the Current provided an update on Claire Lavogez, who tore her ACL in the Current’s 2-1 win over the Houston Dash in the quarterfinals. She is expected to return to the team midseason.

The Current also released their preseason roster in full, including new additions of Debinha, DiBernardo, Gautrat and Mimmi Larsson, as well as the team’s eight 2023 draft picks: Ashley Orkus, Jordan Silkowitz, Mykiaa Minniss, Ella Shamburger, Rylan Childers, Michelle Cooper, and Alexa Spaanstra.

The Current will open their preseason slate this week at the team’s facility in Riverside, Missouri, before heading to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, from February 6 through March 1. They will go to San Diego from March 5-14 before returning home ahead of the regular-season opening weekend on March 25.

The NWSL has not yet released its match schedule for the 2023 season.
