KC Comets’ Zach Reget called up to U.S. Futsal National Team: ‘It’s a blessing’

The Kansas City Comets have gone seven games without a win following a 6-5 overtime loss against the St. Louis Ambush on Sunday in St. Charles, Missouri.

Sunday’s defeat wasn’t just painful because of the heart-piercing finish, but also because more than 300 of the Comets faithful made the trip to St. Charles.

“That’s why this one hurts even more,” Comets forward Zach Reget said. “We almost had as many fans as St. Louis did. That support is rare. You have to reward those fans with wins, and we are not doing that right now. We’re letting them down. It’s not a good feeling, but we definitely appreciate the support.”

The Comets were in good shape to reward those fans with a 4-1 lead at halftime. But lapses of concentration continued to come back to haunt the team as its nightmare losing streak continued. Kansas City scored just once in the second half as the Ambush scored the final three in regulation before snagging the game-winner with an overtime goal on the power play.

“Same stuff, different game,” Reget said. “We have these spurts late in the game where we give up a couple of goals at a time and we don’t answer.”

That continuous theme of conceding goals in bunches was evident in Friday’s 7-5 loss against the Baltimore Blast. After going down 2-1, the Comets conceded three more goals within two-and-a-half minutes during the second quarter.

The Comets return to Cable Dahmer Arena for a three-game home stand following a six-game road swing.

The path back on home turf will not be easy. The Comets will face a tough Tacoma Stars team on Friday, Feb. 9, and then host Mexican World Cup veteran Marco Fabian and the Empire Strykers the next day.

Leo Gibson breaks record for most goals in KC history

Leo Gibson now stands alone at the top of the all-time scoring charts in the history of professional soccer in Kansas City after breaking the 22-year-old record on Sunday.

Gibson passed Comets and Attack legend Kevin Koetters when he scored the 334th goal of his Comets career in the third quarter against the Ambush.

“I feel blessed and honored,” Gibson said. “It’s every player’s dream and hope to break records, but breaking this record isn’t something I thought about. I am very blessed to have the talent and opportunity. I treat every opportunity like it’s my last. That’s what got me to where I am right now.”

Reget called up to national team

The Comets will be without their leading scorer Zach Reget, who will miss two games as he joins the U.S. Futsal National Team for camp in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from February 5-15. Reget has been an integral figure for the futsal squad in recent years and was a finalist for U.S. Futsal Player of the Year in 2023.

The trip to Argentina will be the team’s final camp before trying to qualify for the FIFA Futsal World Cup in April’s CONCACAF Futsal Championship in Nicaragua.

Reget described the news as “bittersweet” because it’s always an honor to get called up to the national squad, but he didn’t want to miss critical games with the Comets. More than half of the 16-player roster called into camp plays in the MASL and will miss games.

“It’s a blessing to get called and put the badge on,” Reget said. “I’m not happy that I’m letting down my teammates and organization by not being here.”
