The Kansas City Comets opened the weekend with a disappointing 5-4 loss at home against the Baltimore Blast before 4,559 fans at Cable Dahmer Arena.

But after a night of travel, the Comets rebounded to shock the Milwaukee Wave with an 8-6 road victory.

Sunday’s win was the Comets’ first away from home since December, when they beat St. Louis in overtime. It was also the first time this season the Comets took all three points on the road in regulation.

“We’ve been missing that for a while,” Comets assistant coach Stefan Stokic said. “It feels really good to finally pick up all three points, especially with the travel that we had. To come here and beat a really good Wave team is tough.”

No trip to Milwaukee is easy, but this one was made even more difficult by the long drive to Milwaukee for Sunday afternoon’s contest. The Comets hit the road shortly after losing to the Blast Saturday night at Cable Dahmer Arena in Independence.

After failing to hold a lead against Baltimore, the Comets held the lead for the majority of Sunday’s game against the conference leaders.

After the Wave took a 5-4 lead midway through the fourth quarter, Junior Kazeem scored the equalizer. Then, goals from Rian Marques and John Sosa put the Comets ahead 7-5 inside the final five minutes.

Derek Huffman pulled Milwaukee within one, but Zach Reget made sure the Comets would take all three points when he launched the ball into the empty net to make it 8-6.

The Comets now sit fourth in the Eastern Conference with four games remaining.

Saturday’s loss was a tough result to swallow, considering the Comets and the Blast are battling for playoff positioning. It was also KC’s second straight loss to Baltimore after renewing the rivalry for the first time since 2019.

“Having lost back-to-back to them it’s hard to make the case of this being a rivalry,” said Comets player-coach Leo Gibson. “It’s always nice to start this again, but we have to do better in order to get the rivalry going again.”

The Comets will have one more opportunity to reignite the rivalry when they visit Baltimore this coming Sunday. Before traveling to Baltimore, the Comets host the Florida Tropics at Cable Dahmer Arena on Saturday. Visit www.kccomets.com/tickets for tickets.
