The Kansas City Comets defeated the Milwaukee Wave 8-4 on Sunday in front of a crowd of 4,361 at Cable Dahmer Arena in Independence.

After an early 1-0 deficit, the Comets responded to take a 2-1 lead in the first quarter before building a lead that reached 8-3.

It took outstanding efforts on both sides of the ball for the Comets to come away with the win. Six Comets players got on the scoresheet, with player/coach Leo Gibson and forward Zach Reget each scoring twice. Comets goalkeeper Nicolau Neto made a season-high 25 saves.

The Comets were outshot 43-39, but opportunistic finishing in the second half combined with solid defense and outstanding goalkeeping allowed the Comets to claim with a four-goal win.

“It’s easier to play at home with the fans supporting us,” Neto said. “These were two good teams that have played each other so often. There’s always a little bit more spiciness to the rivalry.”

Reget sparked the Comets in the first quarter. After spending the week in Ohio with the United States Futsal National Team, Reget made sure he would not miss the game against Milwaukee.

He originally planned to fly in from the team’s camp Sunday morning, but with uncertain weather that could’ve delayed his arrival in Kansas City, Reget decided to drive.

“I was not going to miss this, so I was excited to get here,” he said. “I am very happy with the result.”

Reget understood the magnitude of the rivalry and contributed a pair of first-quarter goals and a fourth-quarter assist to help the Comets win their third game against the Wave at Cable Dahmer Arena this season.

“You can score against bottom teams, but can you perform in the big games?” he said. “That’s what all of us are trying to get behind each other and do because regular season is fun but playoffs is when the other animal needs to come out.”
