KC Chiefs running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire starts training camp on PUP list

The Chiefs are opening training camp without their starting running back.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire was placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list with an undisclosed ailment, according to Tuesday’s NFL Transactions report.

This is a surprise listing for Edwards-Helaire because the third-year pro participated in the offseason workout program, which included organized team activities and mandatory minicamp, in the weeks before training camp.

The Chiefs also placed backup defensive tackle Cortez Broughton (undisclosed) on the PUP list.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is scheduled to address the media after Wednesday’s first full team practice, so more information on Edwards-Helaire and Broughton will likely be known then.

Edwards-Helaire and Broughton join tackle Lucas Niang (knee), offensive lineman Prince Tega Wanogho (leg) and cornerback Rashad Fenton (shoulder) on the PUP list. None of the players are allowed to practice during training camp until they are medically cleared.

Without Edwards-Helaire, the Chiefs appear to have adequate depth at the running back to start camp with Ronald Jones, Jerick McKinnon, Derrick Gore, Isiah Pacheco, Tayon Fleet-Davis and Jerrion Ealy.

Edwards-Helaire, the Chiefs’ first-round pick in 2020, finished the 2021 season with 517 yards rushing and four touchdowns on 119 carries, adding 129 yards receiving and two touchdowns on 23 catches. He spent time on injured reserve last season with a knee injury, and missed a total of six games.
