KC Chiefs’ Harrison Butker still not practicing. Here’s coach Andy Reid’s assessment

The Chiefs’ wait-and-see approach on kicker Harrison Butker will extend another day.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Butker (left-ankle sprain) would not practice Wednesday ahead of Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts.

Butker, who suffered the injury in the Sept. 11 season opener at Arizona, did not practice last week and missed Week 2’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers. The continued absence is a concern, for sure, but Reid emphasized the need for caution on the part of the team, and Butker himself, in how they treat his injury.

“I’m not necessarily telling you it’s a high-ankle sprain; it’s an ankle sprain,” Reid said. “It’s a matter of getting the swelling out and letting the tendons there heal up a little bit.”

The Chiefs have insurance at the placekicker position with recently signed practice-squad kicker Matt Ammendola, who was elevated to the Chiefs’ active roster for last week’s home-opening win against the L.A. Chargers.

Ammendola came through with two field goals and three extra points, and he would likely step in again if Butker is definitively declared out for Sunday’s game, as well.

In other injury-related news, Reid said defensive end Mike Danna, who suffered a calf injury in Week 2, will not practice.

Reid also announced the signing of defensive end Benton Whitley from the Los Angeles Rams’ practice squad, a roster move that should bolster the Chiefs’ pass rush. Whitney was observed on the practice field wearing No. 53.

The Chiefs later in the afternoon released their official injury report with practice designations.

Wide receiver Mecole Hardman put in a limited practice with a heel injury suffered in Week 2. The Chiefs listed wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling (hip), left Orlando Brown Jr. (knee), right guard Trey Smith (ankle), wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster (shoulder) and wide receiver Justin Watson (chest) as full participants in Wednesday’s practice.

For the Colts, tackle Bernhard Raimann (ankle) was the only player who was unable to practice Wednesday. Indianapolis listed wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. (quad), defensive tackle Deforest Buckner (hip) and defensive end Yannick Ngakoue (back) as limited participants. Linebackers Shaquille Leonard (back) and Zaire Franklin (shoulder), safety Julian Blackmon (shoulder), wide receiver Alec Pierce (concussion) and defensive tackle Grover Stewart (shoulder) practice fully.
