GREEN BAY – Kayla Karius is coming home.

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is expected to name Karius its new women’s basketball coach to replace the recently retired Kevin Borseth.

Karius has spent the past two years as the head coach at South Dakota and went 23-13 this season.

Karius — whose maiden name is Tetschlag — is no stranger to Phoenix fans. She is one of the best players in UWGB history and was part of its only Sweet 16 team as a senior in 2011.

Karius helped lead the Phoenix to the NCAA Tournament three times and to four Horizon League regular-season championships. She was a first-team all-conference selection twice and was the league’s co-player of the year and made the all-defensive team her final season.

The former Sheboygan North star played four seasons in Europe after graduating from UWGB.

Karius started her coaching career as an assistant at South Dakota under former Borseth assistant Dawn Plitzuweit and earned high marks for her recruiting ability and her work in helping run the defense.

She left after two seasons to take an assistant role at Wisconsin and served as the associate head coach and the recruiting coordinator during her third and final year with the program before joining Drake as an assistant in 2021.

Karius earned her first head coaching job at South Dakota a year later after Plitzuweit left to become the coach at West Virginia.

South Dakota went 14-16 overall and was fourth in the Summit League in Karius' first season before winning 23 games this season.

The Coyotes finished the campaign with a nice run in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament, making the Super 16 for the third time in program history.
