Kayakers helped rescue a pilot after his small plane crashed into an icy creek, Maryland officials said.

The plane ended up in Beards Creek after it went off the runway at Lee Airport in Edgewater on Monday, Dec. 26, according to WBALTV 11.

The Anne Arundel County Fire Department said the pilot was the only person in the plane.

The fire department said the pilot was sent to a local hospital for his non-life threatening injuries.

All the kayakers who helped with the rescue were accounted for and taken off the water, according to a post on Twitter by the fire department.

“Fire Department personnel are assisting several kayakers with warming. Great job by all who responded,” the post on Twitter said.

Beards Creek is about 35 miles south of Baltimore.
