If there’s one lesson to be gleaned from Katie Holmes’s New York City street style, it’s to invest in timeless, wearable pieces that will easily take you from season to season.

Case in point: Rhe Dawson's Creek alum did just that during an afternoon promenade on Thursday, when she stepped out wearing the mustard-brown trench coat of my spring dreams. The khaki piece featured wide collars spilling out from her neck to her shoulders, and a row of mocha-brown buttons lining the center. She paired the oversize outerwear with a few more sensible pieces, including a blue-and-white striped button-down, blue straight-leg jeans, and black leather loafers. To top it off, she accessorized with tortoiseshell cat-eye sunglasses and a slouchy black leather tote bag.

As we approach the starting line for summer, it would be remiss of me not to note the array of superstar coats Holmes has pulled out of her arsenal so far this spring.

There was the silver-studded denim trench from Chloé, which she superbly styled with floor-grazing baggy pants and glossy black Mary Jane flats; then there was the camel wool coat from the Frankie Shop, which looked effortlessly cool with a pinstriped blouse and business trousers. But, my personal favorite was her quilted military-green canvas jacket, a brand-new piece from Everlane’s limited-edition collection with design duo Marques ' Almeida, which she dressed up with black wide-leg slacks and a hot pair of slingback kitten heels.
