Katharine McPhee, 39, Cheekily Defends Marriage to David Foster, 74

Katharine McPhee and David Foster visit the SiriusXM Studio on Nov. 14, 2023, in Los Angeles, Calif.

Katharine McPhee is perfectly aware of the 35-year age gap between herself and her husband, David Foster—and recently, the American Idol Season 5 runner-up playfully defended her marriage on social media.

On Tuesday, Jan. 9, McPhee took to TikTok with a tongue-in-cheek message to those who might question her May-December romance.

"Why'd you marry David Foster...?" overlain text on the clip reads, as she gazes into a makeup mirror and lip-syncs, "Because it's iconic. And I love to do iconic s---."

Fans of The Kardashians on Hulu likely recognize the sound byte is from Kim Kardashian when she explained why she decided to sign on for a role in American Horror Story.

In the comments, TikTok users had mixed reactions to McPhee's video. Some were amused, with one person commenting, "Best use of this sound 😂😂."

Someone else wrote, "and it's clear he ADORES YOU! 🥰."

Yet another person commented, "You're the star tho. You're iconic. ✨"

Other TikTok users gave McPhee a hard time about being Foster's fifth wife. One person snarked, "Oh come on who HASN'T married David Foster."

Another person wrote, "I think the list of women who haven't married David Foster is shorter but go off."

In 2006, McPhee and Foster met after she finished second on American Idol at age 21. Foster, 56, produced her first single after the show. They maintained a friendly/professional relationship for years; Foster even attended her 2008 wedding with Nick Cokas.

It wasn't until 2019 when the couple tied the knot, when McPhee was 35 and Foster, was nearly 70. They welcomed their first child together, a son they named Rennie, in 2021. (Foster also has five daughters from previous relationships.)

In 2021, McPhee opened up about her and Foster's large age gap during an interview on Dr. Berlin's Informed Pregnancy Podcast.

"We all have the ability to label things and to look at something for the way that it looks or face value and make a judgment," she said. "So I totally get the judgment initially, but things are never as they appear, things are never exactly as they appear and I'm in love with our love story and that's all that matters."

McPhee later added: "There was never one day that I ever doubted my decision to be with him. Even if we had an argument or whatever, I'm so crazy in love with him and so grateful. ...I loved being around him before we were even married."
