Kate Winslet has got candid about the topless scenes she's filmed for biopic Lee, which chronicles the life of model-turned-war-photographer Lee Miller.

The Oscar-winner plays the titular role in the film directed by Ellen Kuras, cinematographer for Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind.

Chatting to Vogue, Winslet opened up about defying unattainable beauty standards when going topless for a picnic scene lifted from Miller's life.

The film mimics a famous photograph that captures Miller, her future husband Roland Penrose (played by Alexander Skarsgård in Lee), Man Ray, the poet Paul Éluard, his wife Nusch and the model Ady Fidelin, all picnicking shirtless in France.

"You know I had to be really f**king brave about letting my body be its softest version of itself and not hiding from that," Winslet said, explaining she hadn't been able to exercise due to a back injury.

In another scene, she wears a bikini top, revealing she received some comments about her body.

"And believe me, people among our own team would say, 'You might just want to sit up a bit,'" she said.

"And I'd go, 'Why? [Because of] the bit of flesh you can see? No, that's the way it's going to be!'"

Winslet is no stranger to playing characters who subvert beauty expectations. For HBO's Mare of Easttown in 2021, the actress sported darker roots over brassy blonde lengths to portray gritty detective Marianne 'Mare' Sheehan, who certainly had no time for a monthly colour appointment, with a killer on the loose.

Previously speaking of Miller as an inspirational figure, Winslet revealed what had drawn her to the role.

"To me, she was a life force to be reckoned with, so much more than an object of attention from famous men with whom she is associated," Winslet told Sky.

"This photographer, writer, reporter did everything she did with love, lust, and courage, and is an inspiration of what you can achieve, and what you can bear if you dare to take life firmly by the hands and live it at full throttle."

Alongside Winslet and Skarsgård, Lee also stars Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Andy Samberg as Life Magazine photographer David E. Scherman, Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard as French Vogue fashion director Solange d'Ayen, Mandy's Andrea Riseborough as British Vogue editor Audrey Withers and The Crown's Josh O'Connor as Lee's son Anthony.

Lee is coming soon to UK cinemas and Sky Cinema.
