Kate Upton Loves Function Over Fashion When She's in Mom Mode: 'I Need to Feel Confident' (Exclusive)

The model and actress is one of the faces of Anne Klein’s spring/summer 2024 campaign. Ahead, she talks her style, self-care routine and mom life

Kate Upton loves a glamorous red carpet moment, but on the daily, when she’s juggling multiple jobs, a comfortable look is what helps her power through.

“I am a function [over fashion] girl for sure. Living in New York and being a mom [Upton shares daughter Genevieve, 5, with husband Justin Verlander], I need to not get the blisters and feel comfortable and confident,” the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model, 31, tells PEOPLE exclusively. “When you feel confident in your clothes it shows.”

There’s no brand that embodies this message quite like Anne Klein.

On April 12, Upton was named one of the faces of the fashion brand’s 2024 spring/summer campaign alongside model Kendra Bailey. The message behind it celebrates the modern-day multi-hyphenated women, like Upton, through clothing.

“It’s always meaningful to collaborate with a company that wants to do more for their legacy than just the business aspect and wants to also support women,” Upton tells PEOPLE.

The campaign — captured by Anthony Mandler in Miami, written by Keli Goff (a writer and producer of And Just Like That…) and narrated by Ilfenesh Hadera — also spotlights the “Anne Klein woman” who gravitates towards elevated yet wearable pieces. Upton knows a few people in her life who can resonate with her dynamic lifestyle.

“Every woman I know or am friends with is always pulled in different directions, whether it's in multiple children's lives or supporting their friends, themselves, husbands,” she says, adding that Anne Klein’s storytelling “can relate to all women and shows that we need to support each other as a community.”

Upton also loves that Anne Klein “builds a closet for busy women.”

“I am drawn to classic pieces. Although I do love to incorporate some trendy pieces into my life, I always feel like I go back to that uniform, especially on a busy day,” she says.

Her uniform would be her favorite pair of jeans or slacks paired with a T-shirt or a turtleneck or a dress. She calls these the “tried and true” dependable basics in her wardrobe. And if she discovers a clothing item she loves, you can bet she’ll buy it in every color because that’s just the kind of shopper she is.

“If I'm feeling overwhelmed, I like to go to my core basics, and that's what Anne Klein really does well,” she says.

Fans get to see all sides of Upton and her style in the campaign, which depicts the model doing a variety of everyday activities that we can all relate to. In one photo, she poses in an olive green bomber jacket, matching pants and oversize sunglasses while she sips on an iced coffee and takes a phone call. In another, she enjoys a chic dinner date in a vibrant sequin yellow dress. A studio portrait captures Upton, dressed in a pale green slip, tailored blazer and beige ballet flats, as her most authentic self.

These pieces, and many more of the timeless staples in the collection, are now available to shop at anneklein.com and in store at Macy's or at macys.com.

Whether she’s in full mom mode, modeling or acting (Upton stars in the new film Sweet Dreams), Upton finds grounding moments in her day by prioritizing her mental health. In fact, her mantra around confidence is all about feeling beautiful from the inside out.

“If you're not feeling the most like yourself, then your family and friends are going to pick up that energy. So for me, it's always having that community around you and finding my own routine within the chaos, whether it's [through] working out, eating healthy, drinking enough water and just really finding me time."
