Kate Middleton and Prince William are marking their 13th wedding anniversary with a previously unseen portrait, giving another glimpse into a piece of royal fashion history.

On April 29, the Prince and Princess of Wales released a never-before-seen image by photographer Millie Pilkington. The black-and-white photo showed Princess Kate, 42, smiling in her white V-neck gown with lace overlay by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen that she sported for her walk down the aisle in Westminster Abbey. Prince William, 41, stood behind her in a black military uniform, which is not what he wore to tie the knot!

William famously donned the scarlet tunic of the Irish Guards when he married Kate, a choice full of significance. Prince William was the Colonel in Chief of the regiment at the time (a post that his wife later took over in 2022), and Prince Harry revealed in his memoir, Spare, that the red uniform was encouraged by their grandmother Queen Elizabeth.

"He’d asked Granny if he could wear his Household Calvary kit, and she’d turned him down. As the heir, he must wear the Number One Ceremonial, she decreed," Prince Harry wrote in his book, published in 2022.

"Willy was glum at having so little say in what he wore to get married," Harry said, adding that his brother told him he "felt frustrated" by the decision.

In the newly shared portrait by Pilkington, Prince William appeared in the black frock coat uniform of the Blues and Royals. The Duke of Sussex would also don the black dress uniform when he married Meghan Markle in May 2018.

Royal watchers got a glimpse of Prince William in his second wedding look on the big day in 2011 when he and Kate drove away from Buckingham Palace in a vintage Aston Martin convertible, which was festively decorated with balloons and a license plate reading "JU5T WED."

A fuller look at the Blues and Royals uniform was later seen in December 2022, when fan account RoyalInstaBlog published a picture on Instagram showing the newly-minted Duke and Duchess of Cambridge seated together in a rare photo from their wedding day.

But Prince William wasn't the only one to have an outfit change on his wedding day — so did his bride!

While Kate drove off from the palace in Queen Elizabeth's Cartier Halo Tiara, veil and lace wedding gown, she later swapped her wedding ceremony gown for a second, sleeker dress for the evening reception. Princess Kate’s second look, also by Burton for Alexander McQueen, was a white satin strapless gown with a full skirt and band of bejeweled detailing at the waist.

The royal bride removed her tiara and veil, added a fuzzy white shrug and let down her half-updo hairstyle as she left Clarence House to return to Buckingham Palace for the dinner dance hosted by King Charles later that evening.
