The Crown season 6, part 2, is finally here, and it wastes no time diving into Kate Middleton and Prince William’s love story at St. Andrews, the university where they met. Of course, everyone also gets to meet the other people they dated before they became an item.
In episode 7, viewers see Kate with a new beau, Rupert Finch, “Finchie,” (Oli Green) who she starts dating during her freshman year at St. Andrews. Rupert is a senior and things seem serious enough for Kate to bring him home during the holidays.
Towards the end of the episode, while Will is lamenting his fortunes at home in London, Kate is at home with her parents and her new boyfriend. Carole Middleton clearly isn't very impressed by Rupert, and she follows Kate to her room to ask if she’s trying to make a point to her by dating him. (Carole, The Crown insinuates, is trying to get her daughter in front of the prince.)
William is definitely aware of Kate’s romance with Rupert, and definitely seems bummed when he sees them cozying up together. But is Rupert Finch a real person? And who else did Kate date? Here’s the deal.

Rupert has been asked about his time dating Kate and he had this to say, per the Daily Mail: “It's not something I'll ever talk about. It's between Kate and me and was a long time ago."
Who is Rupert Finch?
Rupert is a former student at St. Andrews University who used to date Kate Middleton. "Finchie" was a member of the school’s cricket squad and was very popular, according to the Daily Mail.
He and Kate dated for less than a year and they both had similar upper middle-class backgrounds. "He was considered by some more Kate's 'speed' than a future King,” according to the book, William’s Princess, per the Daily Mail.
Who else has Kate dated?
Kate’s “first love” was Harry Blakelock, who she dated when she was at Marlborough College, according to Hello! They broke up before she went to St. Andrews and she was reportedly heartbroken afterward.
Kate also reportedly dated CBS News correspondent Willem Marx when she was at Marlborough College, as well as Henry Ropner, a friend of William’s from Eton, when she and Prince William were on a break.
Rupert married Lady Natasha Rufus.
A year after Will and Kate's massive royal wedding, Rupert found his own lasting love, and proposed to Lady Natasha Rufus in 2012, according to the Daily Mail. The two then married on June 8, 2013 in Cirencester, England.
Natasha is actually the designer behind the upscale ethical fashion label Beulah London. She is on Instagram, but her account is private.
He’s a lawyer.
Rupert went on to work for the law firm Mills & Reeve after school and he now works as a general counsel for technology company Fortescue WAE, according to LinkedIn.
Rupert’s profile says that he’s an “experienced lawyer with a demonstrated history of working in the advance materials, chemicals, automotive, battery, fuel cell, life science, and medical components sectors."
He has three children.
Rupert and Natasha have welcomed three kids together—daughters Georgia, Cienna, and India. Their youngest, India, was born in 2020.
“My business and the social mission we support has a lot of links to India,” Natasha told Hello! after her youngest daughter’s birth. “Rupert and I always loved the name India, it was the only name we both agreed on. We had it picked out a while ago.”
Kate wears a lot of his wife’s designs.
Kate has repeatedly worn her ex-boyfriend's wife's clothing line over the years. “It’s always lovely to see the Duchess in Beulah,” Natasha previously told Hello! “She’s a wonderful ambassador for British brands and that is more important than ever at the moment.”
