Kate Hudson Says New Song Is Inspired by 'Absolutely Consuming Joy' of Welcoming Son Ryder

The actress said the feeling of watching son Ryder, now 20, grow up "had to be part of the record"

Kate Hudson is opening up about the inspiration behind her music.

The actress' new music video for her song "Live Forever" features home videos of Hudson's now 20-year-old son Ryder as he grows up throughout the years. Hudson, 44, sings about how her son changed the trajectory of her life as the video switches between different clips from Ryder's childhood.

"But for me, it's about the absolutely consuming joy Ryder was for me from the moment he arrived," Hudson said of her song.

"Nothing can prepare you for a love that swallows you whole, but that's what watching my son grow up has been for me — and when we started writing these songs, it was a feeling that absolutely had to be part of the record."

Although she was concerned about Ryder's privacy, Hudson said she wanted to "show people how glorious loving a child can be."

"I was so young when Ryder was born, I look back and marvel; I was almost a kid, too, so we were able to fall in love with growing up at the same time. And when you listen to the song and watch, it sweeps you up like someone's arms around you."

Hudson was 24 when her son, whom she shares with ex Chris Robinson, was born. She is also mom to son Bingham, 12, whom she shares with ex Matt Bellamy, and daughter Rani, 5, whom she shares with fiancé Danny Fujikawa.

In February, the star told PEOPLE how she is in disbelief that Ryder is no longer a teenager, adding that she was only "a couple years older" than him when she became a mom.

"That's been the wild discovery for me," the Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery star said. "I just can't believe that I was only a couple years older than him when I decided to have a child."

"The fact that we've been able to get through it together like this, and really, honestly, grow up together, has been incredible," Hudson added of her and her son.

As she looked back, she noted how amazed she was that two decades had already passed.

"I guess while raising him, [I was] just in it and present, and then they fly the nest, and they're sort of cooked — and they're adults!" she said. "You look back going, 'Wow, I can't believe [it].' "
