Kansas high school state softball recaps with stats

6A state recap: Campus powers its way to semis, Derby’s late rally comes up short

Campus banged out 12 hits for a convincing 11-1 win over No. 4 seed Lawrence Free State in an opening-round game at the 6A state tournament in Lawrence.

Freshman Alexis Butler finished 4-for-4 at the plate, including a home run, scored four runs and drove in a pair to lead the way for the Colts, which improved to 17-6 and will play No. 8 seed Olathe South (15-14) in Friday’s 1 p.m. semifinal. Emerleigh Cooper, Gabby Stauffer, Kylah Parson and Kamdyn Minnick all delivered RBI hits, while Ava Baker threw a complete game in the circle for the victory.

In another opening-round game, a furious comeback attempt by Derby came up short in an 8-6 loss to No. 8 seed Olathe South

The Panthers trailed 8-0 after the top of the fifth inning, but began to mount their comeback with two runs in the bottom-half of the inning following a fielding error by Olathe South. Down to its final three outs, Derby brought the game-tying run to the plate with four more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Kyler Demel delivered a 2-RBI single, then Derby tacked on another run on a passed ball and Addy Canfield followed with a RBI triple. But the Panthers were unable to continue the rally with their final two outs, as their 24-5 season came to an end.

4A state recap: Andale-Garden Plain, Circle both move on; Clearwater drops classic

A late rally from No. 8 seed Andale-Garden Plain stunned top-seeded Scott City in a 6-3 comeback win in eight innings to open play at the 4A state tournament in Salina.

Andale-Garden Plain trailed 3-1 entering the top of the seventh inning, but rallied to force extra innings on a game-tying, two-out RBI single by Elsie Johnson.

After recording two outs to begin the top of the eighth inning, Andale-Garden Plain capitalized on a handful of Scott City errors to plate three runs in the inning. Johnson, Bella Cates and Kaylee Altman all finished with two-hit days for Andale-Garden Plain, while Jayna Lies went the distance to pick up the victory in the circle.

Andale-Garden Plain (18-9) will play Circle (24-5) in Friday’s 11 a.m. semifinals after the Thunderbids handily took care of Fort Scott in a 7-1 victory. Andale-Garden Plain swept the regular-season doubleheader matchup between the AV-CTL Div. IV foes, winning 9-2 and 5-3 on April 8.

Circle ace Ellie Randall struck out 14 hitters and did not allow an earned run in a complete-game showing, as she also added an RBI hit and scored two runs at the plate. Kennedy Baker, Harlee Fowler, Kendyl Acker and Logan James all delivered RBI hits for Circle, which led 3-0 after two innings and tacked on four runs in the fourth inning.

In an instant classic, Clearwater went toe-to-toe with the defending champion Wamego in a 2-1 loss that took 17 innings to decide a winner. The pitcher’s duel between Wamego’s Peyton Hardenburger, a Tennessee commit, and Clearwater’s Trista Welty, featured both pitchers going the distance, as Hardenburger struck out 30 hitters and delivered the RBI hit in the bottom of the 14th inning to extend the game. Clearwater had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the 14th inning on a Kylee Hampton RBI double, but Hardenburger’s two-out heroics saved the game. Wamego walked it off in the bottom of the 17th inning on a hit from Kyra Olberding.

3A state recap: Trinity run-rules its way to semis, Cheney falls in opening game

Liberty Lewis drove in five runs on three hits, including a home run, and Trinity Academy finished with 14 hits in a 16-2 rout of No. 2 seed Osage City in a quarterfinals game at the 3A state tournament in Topeka. Courtney Cross drove in three runs, while Klara Robertson and Regan Allen both drove in a pair of runs for the Knights, which improved to 21-4 and will face Frontenac in Friday’s 1 p.m. semifinal.

In another opening-round game, Cheney’s offense was held to three hits in a 10-0, run-rule loss to Silver Lake. Peyton McCormick, Kendyll Walker and Erika Block all collected hits for Cheney, which finished the season with a 19-3 record. Silver Lake (23-2) will face top-seeded Holcomb (26-0) in Friday’s 11 a.m. semifinal.

2-1A state recap: Cedar Vale-Dexter, Inman roll to opening win

Inman exploded for six runs in the third inning to spur a 10-3 victory over Thomas More Prep in an opening-round game at the 2-1A state tournament in Pratt.

Lyla Levin pitched a complete game to earn the victory in the circle for the Teutons, which improved to 18-4 this season and will face top-seeded McLouth (26-2) in Friday’s 11 a.m. semifinal. Ellie Thimmesch homered to begin the rally in the third inning, while Taylor Froese, Chesney Black and Brooke Aden all drove in runs for Inman.

In another opening-round game, No. 2 seed Cedar Vale-Dexter prevailed 4-2 in a pitcher’s duel with Pittsburg-St. Mary’s Colgan. Zoe Davidson earned the win in the circle for Cedar Vale-Dexter, only allowing one earned run, while Gracie Webb, Micah Brown and Kendall Ghram each drove in a run in the win.

Cedar Vale-Dexter (23-3) will face either Onaga or Central Heights in Friday’s 1 p.m. semifinal.
