Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly will win $150 — as well as soft pretzels, cheesesteaks and doughnuts — if the Kansas City Chiefs win the Super Bowl.

The Democratic governor placed the first legal sports bet in Kansas on Sept. 1, wagering $15 that the Chiefs, a Missouri team still beloved across the state line, would win the Super Bowl on 10 to 1 odds.

But Kelly and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro are sweetening the pot.

If the Chiefs win, Shapiro, a Democrat, will send Kelly soft pretzels from Philly Style Hand Twisted Soft Pretzel Bakery in Levittown; cheesesteaks from Tony Luke’s, a prized Philadelphia spot; and mini Eagles doughnuts from Collegeville Italian Bakery in Collegeville.

If the Chiefs somehow lose (let’s not think about it too long), then Kelly will send Shapiro, who was born in Kansas City but raised in the Philadelphia suburbs, steaks from Creekstone Farms in Arkansas City and chocolate-covered sunflower seeds from Sunflower Food Company in Overland Park.

“At the start of this NFL season, I placed the first legal sports wager in Kansas, on the Chiefs to win the Super Bowl,” Kelly says in video shot in her office while dressed in a red Chiefs quarter-zip.

“I’m just as confident now as I was in September, so I’ll join you in doubling down by adding to that bet two of my favorite things from Kansas.”

Shapiro ribbed Kelly on Thursday at a Democratic Governors Association press conference at the Planet Word Museum in Washington that both governors attended.

“I wanted to just begin by offering my condolences to Gov. Kelly for what I know is about to happen on Sunday,” Shapiro said. “I’m looking forward to all that great stuff you’re sending over to Pennsylvania.”

“You’re gonna eat those words,” Kelly, who was wearing red, replied.

Kelly placed Kansas’ first legal sports bet at Hollywood Casino in Kansas City, Kansas, after lawmakers approved legalization last spring and Kelly signed the measure into law. She chose $15 in honor of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ number, 15.

Kelly plans to donate her winnings to a non-profit benefiting the Kansas City metro area if the Chiefs are victorious. Kelly spokesperson Brianna Johnson said the recipient will be announced if the Chiefs win.

Missouri Gov. Mike Parson, a Republican, agreed to a separate bet with Shapiro. If the Chiefs win, the team’s flag will fly in the Pennsylvania Capitol in Harrisburg. But if the Eagles win, its team flag will fly in the Missouri Capitol in Jefferson City.
