Kansas game wardens look for poacher who shot mature buck near farmer and sped off

Kansas game wardens are asking for help in finding the person who shot a mature buck from the passenger side of a white truck just feet away from a farmer and then sped off.

The incident happened around 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 24, a few miles south of Zeandale in rural Riley County, the Kansas game wardens said in a Facebook post Friday.

The farmer was out feeding their cattle and about 100 yards from the road. The deer ran out just a few yards away.

“At that same time, a white colored Chevy truck was driving south down the road and fired one shot from the passenger side of the truck, striking the deer,” the post said. “The farmer was walking in the pasture near the cattle and witnessed the shot, first assuming it was towards them ... The truck then sped off.”

Kansas game wardens said they have a partial tag as well.

The deer died after being shot through the hind end with a rifle.

“Unfortunately, a first-time youth archery hunter has been hunting this trophy relentlessly and was devastated to see the warrior fall this way,” the post says. “The meat was salvaged and did not go to waste. We appreciate the assistance.”

Anyone with information is asked to call game warden Jedlicka at 785-256-3614 or Lieutenant Gehrt at 785-256-1199.
