Kansas City trash pickup canceled for snow, delayed for Christmas. Here’s the schedule

City of Kansas City

Trash pickup was canceled on Thursday and Friday for Kansas City residents because of the winter storm, and is further delayed next week because of the Christmas holiday.

If your scheduled trash collection day was supposed to be Thursday or Friday, you’ll have to wait until next week on Dec. 30 or 31 for it to be picked up. Bulky item pickup will also be suspended until next week.

Since Christmas falls on a Sunday this year, the observed holiday will be Monday. This means trash pickup won’t happen on Monday, but will start on Tuesday, Dec. 27.

Residents will be able to leave up to 12 bags out for collection without tags throughout the week of Dec. 21 to Dec. 31, but hazardous waste, bulky items and leaves and brush will not be picked up. Anyone affected by this week’s cancellations on Thursday or Friday can leave up to 14 bags at the curb for collection.

Here’s how the pickup days are shifted with the holiday and storm cancellations:

  • If your pickup day is usually Monday, your next collection will be on Tuesday, Dec. 27.

  • If your pickup day is usually Tuesday, your next collection will be on Wednesday, Dec. 28.

  • If your pickup day is usually Wednesday, your next collection will be on Thursday, Dec. 29.

  • If your pickup day is usually Thursday, your next collection will be on Friday, Dec. 30.

  • If your pickup day is usually Friday, your next collection will be on Saturday, Dec. 31.

A reminder that many areas surrounding Kansas City use private trash collection, so it’s different businesses that pick up the trash, not the government. You can search your address to see if the winter storm or Christmas will disrupt your trash service on most private collectors’ sites.
